Acoustic ceilings are the most popular choice for many public buildings, offices and schools; certainly for large buildings with space for many people to congregate. In the past buildings were constructed with high ceilings in order to allow the hot air to be drawn away from the living space. Advances in technology, air conditioning in particular, reduce the impact of this issue and expose the consequences of the high ceilings on room acoustics.
 In order to rectify these problems without having to restructure the entire building, which would be both costly and time consuming, acoustic dropped ceilings were invented.
The idea of acoustic ceilings is to lower the height of a modern room, which in turn deadens the impact of any ambient noise. Metal strips hang down from the original structure and individual squares of sound absorbent material can be locked into place within the metal gridwork. The other advantage of installing acoustic ceilings is that they provide a good solution for hiding unsightly air conditioning pipework, wiring for lighting and other such eyesores.
